Early Literacy: Brain Research and Dialogic Conversation
Learning Outcomes: I will be able to articulate the reading models and have an understanding on how the brain learns to read as it relates to Science of Reading. I will develop my ability to support oral language through the implementation of dialogic conversation in my classroom.
During this sectional we will build an understanding of the Science of Reading by identifying the reading models and how the brain learns to read. We will discuss causes of reading difficulties as it relates to the importance of explicit and systematic instruction. Finally we will focus in on oral language and the important role this plays in literacy development. You will learn a specific strategy to support oral language growth in students.
Laura Deering graduated from Carroll University with a degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Early Childhood and Adaptive Education. She also holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in Reading (Reading Specialist 316/317). Deering spent the majority of her career in the Appleton School District as a Reading Interventionist and Literacy Coach. Her passion is working with Teachers, Coaches and Administrators in order to support student learning.
