Roundtable: The Director of Parish Music Position

Martha Johnson, Levi Nagel, Kate Tiefel

The number of churches with a staff person for worship planning – part time, volunteer, even full time – has increased in recent years as parish leaders prioritize worship enrichment. This roundtable features people who serve in such positions. It covers job descriptions, ministry philosophies, organizational ideas, and positive impacts. Attendees will learn how to implement such a position in various ways: expanding the responsibilities of an organist, choir director, or LES music teacher, or even calling a part time musician.

Levi has been a staff minister serving in the area of worship for about 17 years. From 2005-2016 he served at Grace, Falls Church, VA. He currently serves as the Minister of Music and Worship at St. John, Milwaukee (S 68th St). He holds a BA in Music from Wisconsin Lutheran College and a Master of Church Music from Concordia University Wisconsin.

Martha graduated from Martin Luther College in 2004 and was assigned to Nebraska Lutheran High School where she served as choir and band director for 11 years. She is currently in her seventh year of service as the Staff Minister of Music and 5-8 music teacher at the dual campus church and school of Bethlehem Menomonee Falls and Germantown, WI. During these years, she has also served her congregations as an organist and choir member.

Kate Tiefel, M.M. serves as Director of Worship and Music at Emanuel Lutheran Church and School in New London, WI, where she teaches K-8 music and oversees music ministry in the church. She holds a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Michigan State University.
